21+ Adult Science Series

CANCELLATIONS/POSTPONEMENTS

With many of our partner companies issuing new policies around forgoing events due to COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to CANCEL or POSTPONE some events scheduled for STEM Week. You will see a "CANCELED" or "POSTPONED" notice next to those few listings below.

While we have had only a handful of cancellations, there are many STEM Week events that will still be happening this week.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility.

Sometimes, the most interesting discussions occur over a beer or a glass of your favorite vino. (Bonus points if you can remember what was said the next morning!) That’s the concept behind Suds & Science, a monthly event that brings scientists face-to-face with the general public in a neighborhood bar. Each session kicks off with a short and enlightening presentation, after which the floor is open for discussion between the audience and the speaker.

This month's topic is: Under Pressure: How the Body Uses Force to Function
Aristotle defined five senses: sight, smell, taste, hearing and touch. These are the senses that are most obvious to you but there are so many more! Your body also has many ways of detecting internal stimuli. Some are familiar to you, like balance and proprioception. Others quietly monitor your most important body functions. Whether it be your heartbeat, your churning stomach or your filling bladder, your nervous system detects force and tells the body to react appropriately. The mechanisms behind how this happens are still a new area of study. Dr. Marshall from Scripps Research will tell you about how you feel inside and why it matters to your health. Beer available for purchase. Bring your own favorite dinner!

Cost: $5 (plus fees) online; $6 at the door

About Jennifer Samore:

Grounded in the sacred tradition of Immaculate Heart High School (Los Angeles), women of great heart and right conscience, Jennifer Samore is attuned with her heart-mind and is committed to crafting a life in alignment with the precepts.

While literature was a motivating force in her youth, she transitioned to mastering the sciences during college as she pursued a pre-medical education. Simultaneously, she began taking yoga classes at the UCSD’s RIMAC gymnasium. Scientific and spiritual inquiry became intricately linked and her lifelong curiosity for blending her learnings in these seemingly disparate disciplines was sparked. Initially pursuing a doctorate of Pharmacy at UCSF, in 2011 she listened to a deep inner knowing, a calling to create a unique path that is still taking shape.

She holds a Bachelor’s in Biochemistry from UCSD and is a certified yoga teacher (RYT-500), Reiki practitioner and Mindfulness meditation teacher. In 2019, she received her Masters in Kinesiology, Integrative Wellness from Point Loma University and completed as the Beginner Training for Somatic Experiencing in Los Angeles with Berns Galloway.

Jennifer Samore is a native Southern Californian resident. She currently resides in San Diego with her feline boys, Wally & Atticus.

Chat with local experts from UC San Diego to learn about the many obvious and not-so-obvious ways climate change will likely touch all our lives — everything from more extreme natural disasters to health issues, water quality concerns and even financial impacts — and what we can do about it.
Areas of conversation will include:
- Health impact of climate change
- Local flood risk and coastal management (Mission Bay)
- Ocean acidification and its impact on coral reefs
