Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego

We will explore the biology and ecology of deep sea animals through two activities: 1) comparative anatomy of deep-sea crustaceans (visual examination of specimens with the naked eye and under the microscrope) and 2) exploring stomach contents of a deep-sea fish, the longnose lancetfish. Both activities will introduce and examine common morphological and behavioral adaptations to life in the deep sea. Specimens handled by the public will be frozen, thawed or stored in seawater.

Biology through Art

Explore the fusion of biology and art through hands-on drawing activities on biodiversity. Each visitor earns their personal "guardian invertebrate" card!

CITY OF SAN DIEGO Public Utilities Department

We will promote various activities the City's Public Utilities Division participates in and share important information to the community on what's okay to put down the drain at home. We will also provide education on our Ocean Monitoring Program and the different species that are found off the coast of San Diego.

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

We will be offering an art activity that links contemporary art and science. This activity will be for all ages and will be ongoing throughout the day. Using recycled egg cartons, epsom salt, food colorings, and glue we will create sparkly geodes from other worlds!

General Atomics DIII-D National Fusion Facility

We will demonstrate the fundamental physics needed to perform nuclear fusion research. Concepts in fusion, pressure, states of matter, and electricity & magnetism will be explored. Demonstrations include bed-of-nails, gaseous plasma, electromagnets, a differential pressure cannon, liquid nitrogen, electricity generation, and an electromagnetic can launcher.
